At this ARU Discover event, ARU’s Dr Mark Cortnage will discuss his experiences of working with the public and give advice for breaking the diet cycle.

He will draw on example behaviours that he has encountered, typical issues and how we can begin to tackle them. He will also outline expectations of commercial diets and whether they are geared to short term, rather than long term success.

Dr Cortnage is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at ARU. He has over 15 years of experience supporting the public with lifestyle and wellbeing development, around weight management. Recognising the limitations of diets and how ineffective weight management programmes are at engaging with men and women, he proceeded to develop a novel dietary approach alongside sport and behavioural support to induce 91 weeks of significant weight and waist loss in men.

Dr Cortnage has supported over 400 men and women through his programmes, the majority he has worked with personally. His innovative dietary approach supports long-term engagement through educational and behavioural approaches. Over the past 15 years he has been exposed to numerous barriers to weight loss, maintenance and lifestyle improvement. To tackle these, he uses a variety of individually tailored and procedural approaches to support clients.
